Description
Amphistium paradoxum is a "pre-flatfish" from the Monte Bolca lagerstatten from Lutetian Italy.
One eye had incompletely migrated to the center of the head. It is suggested that this migrated eye may have allowed the fish to scan for prey on the bottom while it swam on its side, leaving the other eye free to watch for potential predators.
Ironically, A. paradoxum coexisted (and may or may not have preyed on) with its "modern" flatfish relative, Eobothus.

For me the flatfish is the most strange example of convergent evolution, all due to this fish. It was a good idea to represent the eyes from all perspectives. What is it size?
