Ardea bennuides was a very large heron, much larger than the related living Goliath heron, A. goliath, that lived in coastal marshlands in what is now the United Arab Emirates. It became extinct when humans colonized what was apparently its final stronghold of the island Umm al-Nar, around 5000 B.C.
As the specific name suggests, it's been suggested that this was the inspiration for the mythological Bennu Bird of ancient Egyptian myth, a phoenix-like bird that was the soul of the god Ra. Comments
