Artist's Comments

The bohlinid giraffe Honanotherium schlosseri, of Late Miocene Hunan Province, China.

H. schlosseri, along with Bohlinia attica, were once thought to be direct ancestors of the modern giraffe, Giraffa sp. New anatomical comparisons now show that H. schlosseri was B. attica's ancestor, and that the two of them formed a branch in Giraffidae separate from Giraffa's.

Anatomy differs from group to group.

There is still no good animal anatomy reference book out other than the main classic one from around 1910, and contemporary ones since then.

The problem is such books contain existing animals, with no reference to prehistoric ones, and even then it is less than adequate.

The point is, as an artist, knowledge of anatomy does not come primarily from a book.

If you really want to know about animal anatomy, read veterinary textbooks. Look at skeletons, attend dissections. Most of all, my main way of using anatomy is to simply look at living animals and observe the dynamics of the musculature. Looking at skeletons in museums helps greatly too.
:iconclan-guard:
Yeah, I suppose it would be harder to get references for them xDD

Ugh, I couldn't though, I can't even bear to WATCH dissections... or see pictures >.< :( Perhaps observing and books more is the way to go :) xD

Yes, as I said, Zoology and Veterinary textbooks are best.
