Description

Reconstruction of the primitive heterostracan, Lepidaspis serrata, of Early Devonian Canada.  L. serrata superficially resembles a thelodont, in that, instead of armor, its exoskeleton is composed of numerous scales with serrated centers.  However, the anatomy easily suggests that of a heterostracan, i.e., a distinct head/cephalothorax, and a tail, and not that of a thelodont.
