The Taotie 饕餮, is said to be one of the "Four Ominous," a quartet of terrible, evil creatures that plague the world.

The Taotie was once a human, born of the Jinyun Clan. His insane gluttony was such that the Yellow Emperor cursed him to become a beast, and banished the wretch to marshes and riverbeds, where he wanders even today.

Because the Taotie's hunger drove him insane several millenia ago, he does not care if his victim is a man, a beast, demon or spirit. All the Taotie cares about are the painfully brief moments his mouth is full whenever he either swallows his victim whole, or chews it to death.
