Name: Smoky Hannah

Notes: The Smoky Hannah is one of the more common birds of the Green Fortress cloud forests on Anak Palao. As with all other Hannahs of the subfamily Alulonychinae, A. anakpalaoensis feeds on leaves, which are fermented in the gizzard, giving the genus its distinctive miasma.
As with all members of the family Alulonychidae, the smoky hannah has a pair of semi-prehensile "fingers" on each wing, the relic of a genetic reversion in the family's ancient ancestor. The "alula claws" (named so despite the fact they are on the wrist) are used in grooming, and have been retained in all known species, including flightless species that have undergone wing atrophy.
